Key Features of the Constitution

  • The Indian Constitution is unique in relation to element and spirit.
  • The 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act 1976, which made many major changes in the Constitution, is called the Mini Constitution.
  • Following are the salient features of the Indian Constitution

    (1) Longest Written Constitution --The constitutions divided into two sections written such as the US Constitution and the unwritten such as the UK Constitution. The Constitution of India is the longest Written Constitution in the World. The main reason for its vastness is the detailed description of the formation and powers of both the Central and Provincial Government

  • The original Constitution of India (1949) contained a Preamble, 395 Articles, 22 Parts and 8 Schedules.
  • Currently there are 12 schedules. The 9th Schedule was added to the Constitution by First Constitution Amendment (1951), 10th Schedule 52nd Amendment (1958), 11th Schedule 73rd Amendment (1992), 12th Schedule 74th Amendment (1992).
  • Even today, the maximum number of Article is basically 395 and 22 Parts, but in terms of calculation there are 465 Articles and 25 Parts.
  • There are only 7 (the world's smallest written constitution) in the US Constitution, 147 in the Canadian Constitution, 128 in the Constitution of Australia and 25 Articles in the Constitution of Africa.
  • Sir Ivor Jennings has called the Indian Constitution the largest and most comprehensive constitution in the world.
